Transition toward carbon neutrality in maritime transport requires both short- and medium-term solutions, the former to deploy available technologies and/or transition fuels such as LNG and, to a certain extent, electricity and the latter based on, today not yet fully available, alternative fuels such as green hydrogen, methanol, electricity and wind).
Dealing with such complexity is not easy particularly for the operators of smaller ships, such as fishing boat and local ferries, and of small ports and marinas due to lower investment capacity and lower technical and managerial skills than large shipowning companies.
The EU project 101124786 POWER4MED, cofinanced by EMFAF, had the ambition to make know-how and know-who available to small operators in the Mediterranean basin to support them in their short- and medium-term transition toward carbon neutral maritime transport.
This is done by the POWER4MED Supporting Structure, a “Supporting Team” of multidisciplinary experts and a set of short- and medium-term capacity building toolkits supporting the path toward carbon neutrality of three sectors of Mediterranean maritime transport, namely fishing boats, commercial vessels (ferries) and marinas.
