LNG and Bio-LNG
Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) and its renewable counterpart, Bio-LNG, play a pivotal role in curbing emissions in maritime transport. LNG, a cleaner-burning fossil fuel, significantly diminishes sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter emissions compared to traditional marine fuels. This addresses stringent global regulations, such as the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) sulfur cap, aimed at improving air quality and reducing environmental impact. Bio-LNG further elevates environmental sustainability, deriving from organic waste and biomass, presenting a carbon-neutral alternative. The dual-fuel compatibility of LNG facilitates a seamless transition, allowing ships to operate on either LNG or traditional fuels. With financial incentives and ongoing technological advancements, LNG and Bio-LNG emerge as catalysts for a greener maritime industry, offering both immediate emission reductions and a pathway towards a more sustainable, circular approach to energy use in maritime transport.

In this lecture Antonio Nicotra examine and compare 5 “drop-in” and 5 “non-drop-in” energy solutions, all of them can be either “fossil-depletable” or “renewable-inexhaustible” sources. Not ignoring electricity, which is a “secondary” source of energy, also derived by any of the above “primary” sources. Finally, in the talk the basics of Olbia EnerClima Project in Olbia Sardinia is provided.
